Manchester United star Diogo Dalot is optimistic about extending his stay at the club and hopes to sign a new contract at the Old Trafford side.

The Portugal international’s deal was set to expire in the summer of 2023. However, the Red Devils triggered the option to extend by a further season. Now, the Manchester-based club will look to tie the 23-year-old down to a long-term contract.

Speaking to the media via Manchester Evening News, Dalot revealed that he was in discussion with United about remaining at the club beyond 2024. The Portuguese is keen on putting pen to paper on fresh terms.

“I think we are in a position to say that we are talking about it, we are negotiating, we are seeing how both parties will benefit. It is no secret that I am happy to be here.

“I love this club and I love to play for this club. We will see how things progress, but we are in a good direction for the team and, for me, this is the most important and, hopefully, individually I can still help the team.”

The right-back joined the Red Devils in the summer of 2018 from FC Porto. Under Jose Mourinho in his debut season, the 23-year-old was a squad player.

However, with the arrival of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Dalot saw his game time reduced drastically. The Norwegian head coach preferred Aaron Wan-Bissaka in his starting lineup.

Subsequently, the Portuguese star joined AC Milan on loan for the 2020/21 season. With the Rossoneri, the 23-year-old got plenty of opportunities to step onto the pitch.

Upon his return to Manchester, Dalot once again saw himself being a bit-part player until Ole’s departure. With Ralf Rangnick’s appointment, the former Porto defender’s fortunes changed at the Old Trafford side. The former interim manager gave the Portuguese plenty of chances in the first team.

Now, under Erik ten Hag, the 23-year-old has established himself as the first name on the team sheet. The full-back has started in the majority of the fixtures in the current campaign, pipping Wan-Bissaka in the pecking order.

Thus, considering Dalot’s importance to the team, it would be wise to secure his future at United. It is an encouraging sign that the 23-year-old is also looking forward to it.
