Transfer News: All eyes at Man United on Dutch veteran as a double move for African duo is ruled out

Cameroon's forward Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting hands the captain's armband to Cameroon's forward #10 Vincent Aboubakar after being substituted during the Qatar 2022 World Cup Group G football match between Switzerland and Cameroon at the Al-Janoub Stadium in Al-Wakrah, south of Doha on November 24, 2022.

Manchester United have ruled out the signing of Vincent Aboubakar and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, with Wout Weghorst the club’s ‘main aim’, according to The Athletic (Subscription Required) [h/t Express].

Erik ten Hag is looking to reinforce the forward line with a new striker after Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure. The 37-year-old’s contract was terminated by mutual consent in November.

As a result, the Red Devils want a temporary replacement for the Portugal international. However, the Al Nassr and Bayern Munich forwards are not being pursued by the Old Trafford side.

Choupo-Moting has mostly been a bit-part player during his time at Bayern and previously at Paris Saint-Germain. But the Cameroon international has stepped up to the plate in the current campaign for Julian Nagelsmann’s team, scoring 11 goals in 16 appearances across all competitions.

On the other hand, Aboubakar is someone who does not have much experience playing for any elite side in Europe. The Cameroonian spent most of his career with FC Porto and is currently at Al Nassr.

Both Aboubakar and Choupo-Moting featured for the Indomitable Lions at the 2022 World Cup. However, the African side were unable to get past the group stages and qualify for the knockout rounds.

One player who caught a lot of people’s attention in Qatar was Weghorst. The 30-year-old came on to good effect against Argentina in the quarter-finals and helped the Netherlands make a comeback. But Louis van Gaal’s team were beaten in the penalty shootout.

The Holland international is currently on loan at Besiktas from Burnley. In the previous campaign, the forward was underwhelming for the Clarets in the Premier League.

However, if Erik ten Hag wants to reinforce his squad with a target man, Weghorst has decent qualities, especially in the air. However, whether United are able to acquire the 30-year-old’s services in the ongoing transfer window remains to be seen.
