Manchester United hold talks with Burnley over Wout Weghorst loan deal

According to the Athletic (Subscription Required), Manchester United have held exploratory talks with Burnley over a loan move for Netherlands striker Wout Weghorst for the rest of the season.

The Dutch striker, who shot to prominence with a sensational brace against Argentina in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar recently is currently out on loan at Turkish side Besiktas joining them from Burnley at the start of the season.

It has now emerged that Erik ten Hag wants to bring his countryman to Old Trafford as a reinforcement in the striker position. Man United are exploring a possible loan deal for the tall, physical 30-year-old target man.

One thing is very obvious. Man United must be looking at Weghorst as merely a rotational option. It is also a clear indication that Ten Hag seems to trust Anthony Martial or Marcus Rashford to play in that position going forward.

Weghorst is an old-fashioned striker. He thrives on balls that are crossed into the box. In games where we have not been able to break opposition defences, having the Dutchman in the box and someone like Luke Shaw to supply crosses to him can be a useful tactic.

Weghorst might not be the best at positional play. How he links up with other players in the Man United team could become an issue but the Dutchman certainly knows where the back of the net is on most occasions.

The 30-year-old has played 18 times for Besiktas since his loan move there, scoring nine goals and providing four assists. He has the experience of playing in the Premier League having played for Burnley before, with his parent club now in the Championship.

It remains to be seen if the Clarets choose to cut short his loan spell in Turkey and send him to Man United. It could bode well for them as well as Weghorst will have gained vital PL game time before Burnley come back into the top-flight next season.

This is a transfer that sounds very interesting. It remains to be seen if they pull this off and manage to sign Weghorst and give the 30-year-old a platform to showcase his skills to the European elite again.
