Rio Ferdinand backs Harry Maguire to leave Manchester United after Lukes Shaw starts at centre-back against Wolves
Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has backed Harry Maguire to leave the club after he was on the bench again as Luke Shaw started at centre-back against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The Red Devils took on Wolves on Saturday (31 December) in the Premier League. Our captain came on as a substitute in stoppage time as the left-back played alongside Raphael Varane for the majority of the fixture.
Speaking on BT Sport (h/t Metro), Ferdinand expressed concern over the English centre-back’s status at the Old Trafford side. Thus, the ex-Red Devil has doubts about the 29-year-old’s future in Manchester.
“If I’m Harry Maguire, I am looking for a new club right now, I have to be honest. You saw what he does for England, he is impeccable for England, he is faultless for England. He puts in good, solid performances for England.
“At Manchester United, it just hasn’t worked out for him. This manager, it is showing in his team selection that he is not going to be one of the top two, three centre-halves in his squad.”
Shaw put in a decent shift against Julen Lopetegui’s team in the 1-0 victory at Molineux Stadium. The left-back also started in the heart of the defence against Nottingham Forest in our previous match and was impressive.
At the start of the campaign, the 27-year-old had lost his place in the side to Tyrell Malacia. However, he managed to pip the Holland international in the pecking order to retain his place in Erik ten Hag’s plans.
Shaw also put in decent displays for the Three Lions at the 2022
World Cup. The former Southampton star was pivotal for England as they made it to the quarter-finals of the prestigious tournament. However, Maguire was key for Gareth Southgate in Qatar as well. The 29-year-old was one of his national side’s best players in the Middle East.
But while our captain has performed well for England, he has not had the same opportunities at United this season. The former Leicester City star has hardly started a game for United in the current campaign.

Maguire had not started in the Burnley and Forest fixtures due to illness. However, even with Lisandro Martinez out, for now, the England international has not been handed starts. If the defender’s situation remains the same, it would not be a surprise to see him part ways with the club next year.
