Watford goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann claims he was “very close” to Manchester United transfer in the summer of 2022
Daniel Bachmann, the current number one at Watford, has claimed that he was very close to a Manchester United move in the recent transfer window. However, a deal did not end up materialising.
The Red Devils were interested in bringing the Austria international to the club following the departure of Dean Henderson on loan to Nottingham Forest. However, in the end, we signed Martin Dubravka from Newcastle United.
Speaking to Heute (h/t Manchester Evening News), the 28-year-old revealed that he was on the brink of a move to the Old Trafford side. However, the shot-stopper is delighted he stayed with the Hornets.
“It was very, very, very close. Really very, very close. In the end, I’m glad things turned out the way they are. The new coach really wanted to keep me. I’m happy, I’m a top performer at Watford now.”
Bachmann is someone with vast experience in English football. He has been at Stoke City prior to his move to Watford. The Austrian has also played in Scotland with Kilmarnock.
However, this season, the goalkeeper has finally got a chance to be the first choice in between the sticks at the Hertfordshire-based club. In the current campaign, the 28-year-old has made 22 appearances in the Championship for the Hornets, keeping nine clean sheets.
Dubravka is currently the second choice at Man United. The Slovakia international signed for the club on the deadline day in the summer of 2022. However, the 33-year-old has hardly featured for the Red Devils this season.
David de Gea has been the chosen one for the Old Trafford side under Erik ten Hag. The Dutch manager has kept his faith in the Spaniard for the 2022/23 campaign.
The 32-year-old was one of our best players last season. He has continued in a similar fashion this term. While the former Atletico Madrid star had a shaky start to the campaign, he has been brilliant since the defeats against Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford.
