Manchester United to hold contract talks with Portugal star Diogo Dalot after 2022 FIFA World Cup

Manchester United will hold talks with Portugal star Diogo Dalot about a new contract after the right-back returns from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano on Twitter (h/t The Sun).

The Red Devils want to push ahead with a new deal for the 23-year-old after the prestigious tournament in the Middle East. His current contract with the Old Trafford side expires in the summer of 2023.

As a result, other interested clubs can swoop in on Dalot’s signature in the coming months. Thus, the Manchester-based club want to be quick about the Portugal international’s extension.

The Red Devils are also planning an overhaul for the right-back spot. Aaron Wan-Bissaka will be sold by the club. The 25-year-old has struggled to make a place for himself in Erik ten Hag’s plans.

A new backup for Dalot is also being lined up by the club. The Old Trafford side want to part ways with the former Crystal Palace star to make way for a new right-back next year.

The former FC Porto star signed for United in the summer of 2018. However, initially, the 23-year-old found it hard to get into the starting lineup. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer preferred Wan-Bissaka in the team for most of his time at the club. And the Portuguese spent a season on loan at AC Milan.

However, with the Norwegian gaffer’s departure, the England U21 international lost his place in the side. Former interim head coach Ralf Rangnick gave Dalot more opportunities in the team.

With the arrival of Erik ten Hag in the Manchester-based club’s dugout, the 23-year-old has retained his place in the starting lineup. He has started in every game except one for the Red Devils.

Thus, considering that the Dutch manager does not seemingly fancy Wan-Bissaka, it would be wise for the club to part ways with him and add reinforcements for the right-back spot.
