Newcastle have entered race for Atletico Madrid star; the Portugal star prefers Manchester United transfer

Premier League rivals Newcastle United have entered the race for Atletico Madrid and Portugal star Joao Felix, who would prefer a move to Manchester United, according to Football Transfers (h/t Manchester Evening News).

The 23-year-old is unhappy with his current situation at Los Rojiblancos. Therefore, the forward wants to move away from the Spanish capital. As a result, the Magpies are eyeing a January transfer for him.

However, even though Eddie Howe’s team are interested in Felix, the stature of the Red Devils makes the Old Trafford side a more appealing option for him. The Tyneside outfit are flying high at the moment and made a considerable investment in the summer of 2022, buying Alexander Isak.

The Portuguese joined Atletico in the summer of 2019 from SL Benfica. The 23-year-old had an impressive breakout campaign in the Primeira Liga, which compelled the Madrid-based club to snatch him up.

However, the 23-year-old has failed to impress during his time at Los Rojiblancos. In the current campaign, the forward has found himself out of Diego Simeone’s plans, starting only five games in La Liga.

While Felix has struggled in Spain, the 23-year-old has been shining at the 2022 World Cup. The forward has played a pivotal role for Fernando Santos’ team as they have made it to the quarter-finals.

In the recent transfer window, Man United bolstered the front line with the addition of Antony. However, with the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo, Erik ten hag’s options in the attack have dwindled.

As a result, Anthony Martial is the only natural number nine in the squad at the moment. Unfortunately, injuries have hampered the French national’s season. Thus, the Dutch manager has had to count on Marcus Rashford up front.

However, it has been evident from the England international’s performances that he is not a striker. Therefore, the Red Devils should pursue a forward in January. However, it remains to be seen whether Felix is the one we will go after.
