Borussia Monchengladbach and Switzerland star Yann Sommer will not join Manchester United in January
Switzerland star Yann Sommer will not join Manchester United in the upcoming transfer window from Borussia Monchengladbach, according to German journalist Sven Westerschulze (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The Red Devils are interested in the 33-year-old and the shot-stopper could still make a move to the Old Trafford side next summer. However, a January move has been ruled out.
Sommer’s current contract with Die Fohlen expires at the end of the 2022/23 season (transfermarkt). The 33-year-old looks unlikely to extend his stay at Gladbach. Thus, a lot of clubs are eyeing the goalkeeper’s signature.

The Switzerland international joined the Bundesliga outfit in the summer of 2014 from FC Basel in his home country. Since then, the shot-stopper has been the number one in goal for the German side.
Sommer has been impressive at Gladbach over the years. The 33-year-old has also established himself at the international level for Switzerland. Unfortunately, the Rossocrociati lost 6-1 to Portugal in the round of 16 at the World Cup in Qatar.
At the moment, David de Gea is the first choice in goal at United. The 32-year-old has been in imperial form for the Red Devils since last season. He had lost his place in the team a few years back. But the Spaniard has bounced back admirably.
The shot-stopper won the Players’ Player of the Year for the 2021/22 campaign. Although he had a shaky start under Erik ten Hag, the former Atletico Madrid star has quickly found his feet.
De Gea made a few errors in the first two games of the Dutch manager’s reign in the Old Trafford dugout. However, since then, the 32-year-old has evidently improved his game, especially the distribution side of things.

Sommer is a year older than our current number one. Even if the Swiss national was apparently better than De Gea with the ball at his feet, it does not make sense for United to make a move for him.
