PSV Eindhoven want £50 million for the Netherlands forward and Manchester United target Cody Gakpo

Manchester United will have to pay £50 million to land the signature of the Netherlands and PSV Eindhoven star Cody Gakpo, according to The Mirror.

The 23-year-old was pursued by the Red Devils in the recent transfer window. However, the club decided to sign Antony from Ajax in the end.

In the summer of 2022, the Eredivisie outfit were demanding £25 million for their forward. However, his goalscoring exploits for both club and country this season have seen that valuation double. The Red and Whites are not keen on losing the Dutch national in January.

The Old Trafford side have lost Cristiano Ronaldo recently. The 37-year-old parted ways with the club, leaving Erik ten hag with one less option to choose from for the number nine position.

United already seemingly had a crisis up front with Anthony Martial’s injury issues. The former AS Monaco star has struggled to stay fit in the current campaign.

As a result, the Red Devils are looking to bolster the forward line. Several attackers are on the club’s shortlist, Gakpo being one of them. AC Milan star Rafael Leao is also being monitored by the Old Trafford side.

The Netherlands have made it to the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Qatar. Louis van Gaal’s team beat the United States national team 3-1 in the round of 16. The PSV star has been influential for the Oranje, scoring in all of their group-stage fixtures.

Marcus Rashford has been leading the line at United for most of the season. While the 25-year-old has done well, his finishing leaves a lot to be desired – which would come as a surprising statement knowing he has three goals at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Thus, a clinical striker is evidently of utmost importance for the Red Devils. While Gakpo has been impressive in front of goal, perhaps we can do with a proven number nine who specialises in finishing chances.
