England star Harry Maguire admits competition keeping him out of Manchester United starting lineup

Manchester United and England star Harry Maguire has admitted that competition for places at the club has kept him out of Erik ten Hag’s starting lineup. However, the defender has revealed he will fight for a place back in the team.

Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez have been the Dutch manager’s preferred partnership at the Old Trafford side. The France and Argentine nationals have formed a solid partnership for the Red Devils.

Speaking to the media via Manchester Evening News, Maguire expresses his desire to play more for United. However, the 29-year-old realises the tough task that is ahead of him in Manchester.

“We have a good strength in depth in that central defence at my club, but I’m going to fight to get back into the team because I don’t like not playing.

“I’m in good form. In the last few games for Manchester United, I’ve played well in them and won both of my last two games. But I’ve just found myself out due to the centre-backs there playing well and they’re excellent players.”

The England international signed for the Red Devils in the summer of 2019 from Leicester City. Initially, the centre-back put in impressive displays for the club and was handed the captain’s armband after a short time at the Old Trafford side.

However, since last season, Maguire has struggled in United’s backline. The defender has made some high-profile errors, leading to criticism from much of the fanbase.

After a disappointing start to the current campaign, Ten Hag decided to drop our captain to the bench. Since then, the 29-year-old has struggled to get back into the starting XI.

While Maguire has been underwhelming in a red shirt, Gareth Southgate has still trusted him with the national side. The 29-year-old has repaid that faith with his performances for England at the World Cup.

The centre-back has been one of the Three Lions’ best players in Qatar. After beating Senegal 3-0 in the round of 16, Southgate’s team will face France in the quarter-finals.

It is encouraging to see Maguire back at his best. The former Leicester star will seemingly hope Ten Hag will provide him with more opportunities at the club. However, it remains to be seen whether the 29-year-old can replicate his displays in Manchester.
