Transfer News: Real Madrid want to sign Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez

According to Defensa Central (h/t Manchester Evening News), Spanish giants Real Madrid are already keen on signing impressive Argentinian centre-back Lisandro Martinez despite him joining Manchester United just back in the summer.

Martinez joined Man United from Ajax in the summer and it was a signing that was received with a fair bit of scepticism. However, the 24-year-old has quickly put all those doubts to bed with his performances until now.

A case can be made for Martinez being the best signing in the Premier League this season. He has been simply spectacular for Man United and has been the only mainstay in defence for Erik ten Hag who has had to change the other centre-back often due to injuries.

There were a lot of question marks over whether the former Ajax man would thrive in the Premier League and cope with the pressure due to the fact that he is not as tall as the conventional centre-backs are.

With his sheer determination and tenacity, Martinez has shown that you do not need height to be a good defender in the Premier League; all you need is the proper defensive acumen and a manager who trusts you to the hilt.

It is no surprise that European giants like Real Madrid are already establishing interest in Martinez although they would probably know that it is highly unlikely for the player to leave Man United having joined them just this summer.

Los Blancos have Antonio Rudiger, Eder Militao, David Alaba and Nacho Fernandez for the centre-back positions and with three of the four players in that list closing in or above the age of 30, it is understandable why Real Madrid want Martinez.

Martinez is right now on international duty with Argentina at the Qatar World Cup and has already put in an impressive display against Mexico. He will be crucial to La Albiceleste’s chances if the team are going to go far in this tournament.

The 24-year-old has had a great start to his Man United career and he looks to be set to stay at Old Trafford for many seasons. Lisandro has still not reached his top potential and still has a higher ceiling to hit.

For many years, we have waited for a centre-back who can lead the backline at Man United. Right now, we have two of them in Martinez and Raphael Varane and let’s hope they can lead us into a new era under Erik ten Hag.
