Real Madrid to rival Manchester United for the signing of PSV Eindhoven and the Netherlands star Cody Gakpo
Spanish giants Real Madrid are set to rival Manchester United for the signing of PSV Eindhoven and the Netherlands star Cody Gakpo, according to reports via Manchester Evening News.
Los Blancos are keen on taking the 23-year-old to Santiago Bernabeu. However, the Red Devils have been interested in the Holland international’s signature since the summer of 2022.
Gakpo has been in imperial form in the current campaign for the Eredivisie outfit. In 24 appearances for the Red and Whites in all competitions, the forward has scored 13 goals and provided 17 assists. His displays have also grasped the attention of national team manager Louis van Gaal.
The 23-year-old is part of the Oranje’s 26-man squad that has travelled to Qatar. And in the Netherlands’ opening two fixtures of Group B against Senegal and Ecuador, the versatile forward has found the back of the net.
Gakpo has become only the second player to score in his first two World Cup games for the Dutch national side. The first Holland player to do so was former United star Memphis Depay in the 2014 edition of the prestigious tournament in Brazil.
The forward has come through the youth ranks at PSV. And while he has been in and around the Eredivisie outfit’s first team for some time now, the 23-year-old has his breakout season in the previous campaign.
Cristiano Ronaldo recently departed from the Old Trafford side midway through the season. And with the 37-year-old’s departure, we evidently need to bolster the attack.
As of now, Erik ten Hag can only call upon Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford to do a job for him in the number nine position. And while the England international has done well as the striker, he is a natural winger.

Similarly, Gakpo also mostly plays out wide. However, the 23-year-old has been prolific for both club and country this year. Thus, the Red Devils could reinforce the left wing with the Holland international and convert Rashford to a number nine.
