Manchester United star Raphael Varane set to start for France against Denmark at the World Cup
Manchester United defender Raphael Varane is set to start for France against Denmark in their second Group D fixture at the World Cup, according to L’Equipe (h/t Manchester Evening News). The 29-year-old was on the bench for Didier Deshamps’ team’s first game against Australia in Qatar.
The 29-year-old was a doubt for Les Bleus after picking up an injury during the Red Devils’ visit to Stamford Bridge. The Old Trafford side drew 1-1 against Chelsea after a stoppage-time equaliser from Casemiro.
Unfortunately, at the hour mark against the Blues, Varane had to be withdrawn and left the pitch in tears. Thankfully for the French, the 29-year-old has recovered in time for the World Cup.
Deshamps’ team will take on the Red and Whites at Stadium 974 on Saturday (26 November). Les Bleus resoundingly won 4-1 against the Socceroos and are top of their group.
Varane will go up against Christian Eriksen when France faces Denmark. The two players have been pivotal for United in the current campaign.
The former Real Madrid star has cemented his place in Erik ten Hag’s starting lineup alongside Lisandro Martinez. The two have formed a solid partnership for us.
As a result, Harry Maguire has been relegated to the bench. Our captain has found it hard to displace the France international from the team.
However, injuries have been an issue for Varane since his arrival in Manchester. Last season, the 29-year-old was forced to the sidelines on a regular basis.
