Barcelona eye Spain and Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea as replacement for Marc-Andre ter Stegen
Manchester United and Spain goalkeeper David de Gea is being eyed by Barcelona as a replacement for Marc-Andre ter Stegen next summer, according to Calciomercatoweb (h/t Manchester Evening News).
If the Catalan outfit’s number one were to leave the club in 2023, the La Liga outfit are interested in the Red Devils’ shot-stopper to reinforce their squad in the upcoming summer transfer window.
The 32-year-old is currently in the final year of his contract at the Old Trafford side. However, the Manchester-based club do have the option to extend his stay by a further season.
De Gea has been one of United’s best players since the previous campaign. He won the Red Devils’ Players’ Player of the Year for the 2021/22 season for his clutch performances.
In the previous campaign, the Old Trafford side struggled defensively. The likes of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof had a hard time coping with opposition attacks. And it was the Spaniard who would often come to our rescue.
The Manchester-based club were underwhelming in the previous campaign. We failed to challenge for titles and finished sixth in the Premier League. However, the 32-year-old was our saving grace.
However, De Gea had a shaky start to the 2022/23 season under Erik ten Hag. The Dutch manager seemingly wants the team to play out from the back. However, fans who have seen the Spaniard play regularly know that his distribution leaves a lot to be desired.
Thankfully, the 32-year-old has managed to adapt and cope under Ten Hag. And the veteran’s shot-stopping has come in clutch at various moments in the current campaign.
Thus, unless United plan to buy someone better than De Gea in the upcoming transfer windows, it would be wise for the club to keep a hold of him.
