Manchester United summer 2022 target Frenkie de Jong hopes to stay at Barcelona “for as long as possible”
Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong, who was linked with a move to Manchester United in the summer of 2022, hopes to stay with the Blaugrana for several years to come.
The 25-year-old was the subject of an erratic saga in the recent transfer window. In the end, a move to the Old Trafford side failed to come about.
Speaking to De Telegraaf (h/t Manchester Evening News), the Holland international expressed his desire to stay in Catalonia for the next decade. Essentially, he ruled out a move to the Red Devils in the coming future.
“I am very happy in Barcelona. When I play it’s great and in terms of living here life is perfect. I see myself at Barcelona for as long as possible. I personally hope for another eight or 10 years.”
De Jong made his name at Ajax under now-United manager Erik ten Hag. The midfielder went from strength to strength in the Eredivisie and ended up getting a move to Barcelona in the summer of 2019.
And in Catalonia, the 25-year-old has turned himself into one of the best players in the world. However, since the arrival of Xavi Hernandez in the Blaugrana’s dugout, the Netherlands star has been in and out of the starting lineup.
At the start of the 2022/23 campaign, De Jong was being pipped by the likes of Sergio Busquets, Pedri and Gavi in the team. However, the midfielder has re-establis
hed himself in his Spanish gaffer’s plans.United ended up signing Christian Eriksen and Casemiro to bolster the middle of the park in the recent transfer window. The duo have made a difference for the Red Devils this season.
While the Danish and Brazilian stars have evidently managed to bring quality to our engine room, the Holland international is someone familiar with Ten Hag’s style of play.
