A-League CEO Danny Townsend set to offer “compelling proposition” to Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo
Danny Townsend, the CEO of A-League, is set to offer Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo a “compelling proposition” to move Down Under.
The chief of the top flight in Australia and New Zealand hopes to entice the Portugal international with a proposal. Currently, the 37-year-old’s future with the Red Devils is up in the air after his interview with Piers Morgan.
Speaking via News Corp (h/t Manchester Evening News), Townsend offered the five-time Ballon d’Or winner “love and respect” in A-League.
“[Ronaldo] said he wasn’t getting any love and respect at Manchester United but we’ll certainly give him plenty of love and respect in Australia. We might not be able to compete financially with other offers but we can compete in other ways.
“Obviously it’s a long shot but we’ve certainly got a compelling proposition for him here in Australia to consider.”
Ronaldo rejoined the Old Trafford side in the summer of 2021 from Juventus. He had left the Manchester-based club in 2009 to join Real Madrid.
After racking up four more Ballon d’Or’s away from United, the Portuguese icon returned to his old stomping ground. And he did what most people expected of him, i.e., consistently finding the back of the net.
The 37-year-old ended as the Red Devils’ top goalscorer in the previous campaign, scoring 24 in all competitions. Unfortunately, while the forward was decent, the Old Trafford side failed to compete in the various competitions.
As a result, United appointed Erik ten Hag as the head coach at the end of last season. And under the Dutch manager, Ronaldo has seemingly found it hard to find his feet.
Ten Hag has preferred to play Marcus Rashford up front in the current campaign ahead of the Portuguese icon. This has resulted in the 37-year-old spending the majority of his time on the bench.

However, in recent weeks, Ronaldo has been given a good run in the team. He started against West Ham United, Real Sociedad and Aston Villa in three consecutive fixtures. But the Portuguese was underwhelming. And now, most fans feel it would be best for the 37-year-old to leave the club.
