Peter Schmeichel hopes Cristiano Ronaldo can continue to stay a Manchester United player after his infamous interview
Manchester United icon Peter Schmeichel has urged the club to keep a hold of Cristiano Ronaldo despite his recent statements about the Red Devils and the manager.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner slammed the Old Trafford side for ‘betraying’ him. Erik ten Hag also came under the cosh, with the 37-year-old stating he had ‘no respect’ for the gaffer.
As a result, the Portugal international’s future at United is uncertain. However, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast (h/t Metro), the ex-Red Devil, who had eight successful seasons at the club, hopes the Old Trafford side and the legendary number seven can get over their differences.
“I believe in fairytales. I’m a big, big fan of Ronaldo – and I’m a big fan of Manchester United having the best players in the world.
“I hope there will be an opportunity where his people and Manchester United can sit down and talk this through and find a solution, because I really want Cristiano to stay a Manchester United player.”
Ronaldo returned to United last year after several successful years away from the club. He had left the Red Devils in 2009 for Real Madrid, where the forward cemented his place as one of the greatest players of all time.
The Portuguese icon’s first season back was successful for him in terms of goalscoring. Unfortunately, the Old Trafford side as a unit failed to perform. As a result, we were unable to compete for titles and finished sixth in the Premier League.
However, while Erik ten Hag has managed to steady the ship in Manchester, the 37-year-old has evidently struggled to find his feet. The Dutch manager has relegated the five-time Ballon d’Or winner to a substitute role in the current campaign.
Ronaldo has cut a frustrating figure on the pitch this season. He has been underwhelming. The Portuguese icon also seems to be missing his shooting boots. In the 2022/23 campaign, the 37-year-old has scored just three goals in 16 appearances in all competitions.

While the five-time Ballon d’Or winner has been a great servant to the club, his recent comments make it difficult for him to put on a red shirt again. And it would be wise if United parted ways with the forward.
