Manchester United want Spanish goalie David de Gea to take a wage cut

According to Daily Star, Manchester United want Spanish shot-stopper David de Gea to take a wage cut to extend his contract with the Red Devils with Erik ten Hag supposedly insistent on keeping him at the club.

The 32-year-old Spanish veteran’s contract has been under discussion for quite some time now. His contract expires in 2023 (Transfermarkt) and the club have the option to extend his deal by one more year.

There were doubts if Man United might move on from the Spanish goalie considering the fact that he is one of the highest earners at the club as things stand but it seems like ten Hag has put his foot down and insisted that he wants De Gea renewed.

De Gea is supposedly on a £375,000 per week contract at Man United and the Red Devils want him to take a pay cut that would help the club save an approximate £5million per annum which could help the club a lot.

At 32, De Gea is coming off the back of one of his best seasons in a Man United shirt. He has been fairly solid this season as well except for the occasional blip and he still has a lot of years of top-flight football left in him.

The Spanish shot-stopper has not been picked for the World Cup squad with Luis Enrique preferring to go with other options. Whilst his international career might not have a bright future, De Gea’s club career is still going very strong.

De Gea has played 19 times for the Red Devils across all competitions this season and has conceded 22 goals whilst keeping nine clean sheets. There have been games like West Ham where the Spaniard singlehandedly saved Man United with his saves.

For all that he has done for the club, the Spaniard deserves to be given a new contract. He can continue at the same level for a few more seasons, and it remains to be seen if David de Gea actually accepts a wage cut.
