Erik ten Hag outlines why he likes French forward Anthony Martial at Manchester United
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag feels France international Anthony Martial fits his style of play at the club. The Dutch head coach likes the profile of the 26-year-old and the qualities he brings to the team.
The forward has been in fine form this season. Under Ten Hag, the attacker seems to have found his feet once again at the Old Trafford side after struggling for a few years.
Speaking to the media via Manchester Evening News, the former Ajax manager outlined Martial’s ability to keep hold of the ball and his intensity up front, among other things, which makes him an important player.
“It’s quite clear in my way of playing, I like the type that Anthony Martial is because he can hold the ball, he’s a target, he can link up, he can also run behind, he has speed, he can finish and he’s a good presser.”
The French national made his way to United in the summer of 2015 from AS Monaco. With the Ligue 1 outfit, the 26-year-old was considered a potential superstar at that time.
Unfortunately, Martial has been unable to fulfil the expectations in Manchester. He has had a few standout seasons with the Red Devils. But the 26-year-old has not turned a lot of heads with his displays.
In the previous campaign, the French national saw himself go down the pecking order at the Old Trafford side. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer rarely gave the forward a chance in the starting lineup.
As a result, Martial opted to join Sevilla on loan in January. Unfortunately, he was not able to light up the Spanish league either and made his way back to United in the summer of 2022.
Thankfully, Ten Hag has evidently been able to get the best out of the former Monaco star. Unfortunately, injuries have hampered the striker’s game time in the current campaign.
