Erik ten Hag ‘would love’ to sign PSV Eindhoven forward Cody Gakpo at Manchester United

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag “would love” to sign PSV Eindhoven star Cody Gakpo in the January transfer window, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The 23-year-old had been linked with the Red Devils in the recent transfer window. But unfortunately, a deal for the forward did not materialise.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT (h/t Manchester Evening News), O’Rourke believes the United manager would be keen on adding Gakpo to his attacking line in the winter. He feels the Red Devils need someone who can add goals to the side.

“I’m sure Erik ten Hag would love to add him to his squad in January because he has been quite vocal in saying that he needs more attacking players at Manchester United.

“He needs more goals as well, and that’s something that Cody Gakpo would definitely add to this Man United team. Looking at his record for PSV this season, he scores goals and assists goals as well, so he’s a player that would definitely tick the boxes for Ten Hag.”

The 23-year-old has been in fine form for the Eredivisie outfit this season. He has featured in 23 games for the Red and Whites in all competitions in the current campaign, finding the back of the net 13 times and providing 17 assists.

The forward has mostly played on the left wing under Ruud van Nistelrooy, the current manager of PSV. He has also become an important member of the Netherlands national team.

Marcus Rashford has been the only prolific attacker in the 2022/23 season for United. The 25-year-old has scored eight goals for the Red Devils in all competitions, the most in the team.

Unfortunately, other members of the forward line have struggled in front of goal. Cristiano Ronaldo has lost his place in the starting lineup. And the 37-year-old seems to be missing his shooting boots in the current campaign.

On the other hand, Anthony Martial has not been able to stay fit for Erik ten Hag. The Dutch manager has not had the option to count on the France international on a regular basis due to his injuries.

Other forwards, such as Jadon Sancho and Anthony Elanga, have not had a big enough impact when they have featured. Although, Alejandro Garnacho has been impressive in recent fixtures.

Thus, Ten Hag evidently requires more firepower up front. However, whether the club back the manager with someone like Gakpo in the January window remains to be seen.
