LOSC Lille midfielder Angel Gomes admits desire to return to Manchester United one day
Former Manchester United star and Angel Gomes has revealed his desire to return to the Red Devils one day. The 22-year-old currently plies his trade in Ligue 1 with LOSC Lille.
The midfielder made his way through the youth ranks at the Manchester-based club. And during the youngster’s time in the academy, some fans had high expectations from him.
However, Gomes never really managed to break into the first team at United. And in the summer of 2020, he signed for Lille. Speaking to L’Equipe (h/t Manchester Evening News), the 22-year-old did not rule out a return to Manchester.
“It was a very difficult decision. In my heart, I wanted to leave, in my head I was thinking of staying.
“Luís Campos and Lille spoke about their project and I believed in it even more. That’s what convinced me to move – the faith Lille had in me.
“Do I imagine myself coming back one day? Obviously, it’s home. I would love to come back.
“I can’t predict what will happen in the future.”
Immediately after signing for the Ligue 1 outfit, the midfielder was loaned out to Portugal. He spent a season on loan at Boavista before returning for the 2021/22 campaign.
Last season, the England U21 international made 30 appearances for Les Dogues in all competitions. He scored three goals and provided two assists, playing in multiple positions.
However, in the current campaign, Gomes seems to have found his feet. The 22-year-old has established himself as a regular first-team player. And Paulo Fonseca has preferred playing him in the number eight role.
At United, the middle of the park was recently bolstered with the arrival of Christian Eriksen and Casemiro. The two have made an immediate impact in a red shirt.
Gomes made his debut for United in May 2017 against Crystal Palace in the Premier League. The midfielder came on for the final few minutes of the fixture.
