Blow for Man United as 23-year-old Portuguese transfer target pens new deal at current club

FC Porto shot-stopper and Manchester United target Diogo Costa signs new contract until 2027

Diogo Costa, who has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United, has signed a new contract with FC Porto until 2027. The long-term deal includes a release clause of €75 million, according to Manchester Evening News.

The Red Devils are keen on the Portugal international, who has been in fine form since breaking out last season. The 23-year-old has been the first choice for the Dragons.

Costa made his Primeira Liga debut for Porto in the 1-0 victory over Boavista in October 2019. However, he mainly remained a backup until the previous campaign.

Last season, the 23-year-old played a majority of matches for the Portuguese outfit and cemented his place as the number one. He played 43 times in all competitions, keeping 17 clean sheets.

Costa has been in inspirational form for Porto this term. The shot-stopper has featured in every top-flight and Champions League games for the Dragons.

And in the prestigious European competition, the 23-year-old has turned heads with his displays. First, at the Estadio do Dragao against Bayer Leverkusen, the goalkeeper saved a penalty in a 2-0 victory.

Next, in the reverse fixture against the Bundesliga outfit, he saved another penalty. To top it off, the Portugal international gave an assist as well as his side won 3-0. Fans who have seen the goalkeeper play know that he is good with the ball at his feet.

Costa made it three penalty saves in three consecutive games in the UCL when he parried a spot-kick as Porto beat Club Brugge 4-0. The shot-stopper’s heroics have seen the Dragons qualify from the group stages.

David de Gea is currently the number one at United. The Spaniard has been pivotal for the Red Devils this season and has consistently made some clutch saves for the Old Trafford side this season.

However, with Erik ten Hag seemingly wanting to play from out the back, will the club replace the 31-year-old with Costa? Only time will tell.
