David de Gea prepared to take a pay cut and sign new contract to stay at Manchester United
Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is prepared to take a pay cut and sign a new contract in order to stay at Manchester United, according to The Athletic on Twitter (h/t Express).
The Spaniard is currently in the final year of his deal with the Red Devils. He currently earns a £375,000-a-week salary at the Old Trafford side. However, the 31-year-old is ‘open’ to accepting reduced terms and putting pen to a new contract.
United do have the option to extend his existing deal by a further season. But the club are yet to trigger that clause. FC Porto shot-stopper Diogo Costa is being eyed by the Manchester-based club as a replacement for the current number one.
However, extending De Gea’s contract is still a possibility for the Red Devils. The 31-year-old has a shaky start to the 2022/23 campaign in the first two games against Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford. Fortunately, since then, he has been in inspiring form.
The Spaniard has come in clutch in big moments for the Old Trafford side. In the previous fixture against West Ham United, the shot-stopper made a couple of brilliant saves to secure the three points for us.
Earlier in the campaign, there were doubts about De Gea and his quality with the ball at his feet. Erik ten Hag seemingly wants the team to play out from the back. Unfortunately, the 31-year-old is not known for his distribution.
However, what the Spaniard brings to the table is world-class shot-stopping abilities. In the big games against the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal, our number one showcased his skills.
