FC Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa ‘reserved’ by Manchester United as transfer target

Manchester United have ‘reserved’ FC Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa as a transfer target to replace David de Gea, according to Correio de Manha via Sport Witness (h/t Manchester Evening News).

The Red Devils have asked the Portugal international’s agent, Jorge Mendes, to keep them informed of any bids received for the shot-stopper. With a £52 million release clause, the Primeira Liga outfit are unlikely to accept anything less than that amount.

United’s current number one, De Gea, is in the final year of his contract. And if the Old Trafford side opt against extending the Spaniard’s stay, Porto’s goalkeeper is the one the Manchester-based club are looking at.

Costa has been in fine form in the current campaign. The shot-stopper had a breakout season last term and has gone from strength to strength since then. Subsequently, the 23-year-old has cemented his place in the Dragons’ starting lineup.

In the 2022/23 campaign in the Champions League, the Portugal international has put in some inspiring displays. Against Bayer Leverkusen at the BayArena, the goalkeeper got an assist. And in the recent fixture against Club Brugge, he saved two penalties.

De Gea is currently the undisputed starter under Erik ten Hag. However, with the Dutch manager seemingly wanting to play out from the back, is the 31-year-old the one to take us into the future? Some fans have their doubts about him.

Other options at Ten Hag’s disposal include Martin Dubravka and Tom Heaton. United also still have Dean Henderson on their books, who is currently having a decent spell on loan at Nottingham Forest.

Those who have seen Costa play regularly know that he is good with the ball at his feet. Thus, it remains to be seen whether the Red Devils pursue his signature in the coming transfer windows.
