Louis Saha urges Manchester United to “wait” before handing Marcus Rashford a contract extension
Former Manchester United ace Louis Saha has urged the club to “wait” before handing Marcus Rashford a contract extension. The ex-Red Devil feels the Old Trafford side have every right to bide their time before making a decision.
The 24-year-old’s existing deal expires at the end of the current campaign. However, United are seemingly yet to make a decision on whether they want to keep a hold of the England international beyond this season.
Speaking to GGRecon (h/t Metro), Saha suggested the club wait to see how Rashford performs. The former striker has been underwhelmed by the 24-year-old’s displays for the past several months.
“Marcus is a player from Manchester that’s come through the club’s academy.
“He’s spent most of his life at the club and knows that over the past year-and-a-half that he’s not been playing to the standards he should.
“It’s not disrespectful for the club to wait a little bit before offering him a new contract because they will want to see how he performs.”
The England international had one of his worst campaigns in a red shirt in the last term. After the Euro 2020 final that the Three Lions lost, where he missed from the spot in the penalty shootout, the United academy graduate looked short of confidence.
In the previous campaign, Rashford lost his place in the Red Devils’ starting lineup. And even when he did feature, the 24-year-old did not make a case for himself.
However, under Erik ten Hag, the England international seems to have found his feet once again. The Dutch manager has put faith in the forward and it has been reciprocated. He has contributed with crucial goals in important fixtures.
Rashford is currently the top goalscorer of the team. In 14 appearances for the Old Trafford side in all competitions, the 24-year-old has found the back of the net six times and provided three assists.
