Diogo Costa and Unai Simon identified by Manchester United as potential David de Gea replacements

Manchester United have identified FC Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa and Athletic Bilbao shot-stopper Unai Simon as replacements for David de Gea, according to The Athletic (Subscription Required).

Currently, David de Gea is the number one in between the sticks for the Red Devils. However, the Spaniard’s current contract runs down at the end of the season. And the 31-year-old’s potential £375,000 per week salary is a hindrance in the Old Trafford side extending his stay.

United do have an alternative strategy for De Gea to stay. However, that would require the shot-stopper to take a pay cut. And it remains to be seen whether the 31-year-old would be willing to do that.

If the Spaniard does end up leaving the club next year, the Red Devils need replacements. And the club are searching for players that fit the profile Erik ten Hag requires.

Costa is being monitored by the United staff. The 23-year-old is having an impressive season with Porto. On the other hand, Spain international Simon, 25, is also on the Red Devils’ shortlist.

United are looking for a shot-stopper who will be able to be the number one for years to come. Thus, a goalkeeper of good age is a top priority for the Red Devils.

Currently, the Old Trafford side rely on players above the age of 30 to play in between the sticks. Martin Dubravka, 33, and Tom Heaton, 36, are the players at the Dutch manager’s disposal.

De Gea has started every game for the Manchester-based club in the current campaign. However, fans still doubt whether the Spaniard is good enough with his feet, which Ten Hag seemingly demands.

Supporters who have seen Costa and Simon play regularly know the two are decent with the ball at their feet. And if De Gea does end up leaving at the end of his contract, fans would not mind the Red Devils getting either of the two options on the list.
