Manchester United are close to agreeing a deal with former Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards for his return to football, according to Football Insider (h/t Manchester Evening News).

The Red Devils are trying to tempt the 43-year-old from his current sabbatical back into an executive role with a ‘huge offer’. Chelsea are also interested in the transfer market specialist. And the Old Trafford side are willing to wait until next summer to get him.

Edwards spent almost 11 years at the Merseyside club. The 43-year-old started as a Chief Analyst and made his way to the sporting director role in 2016. He subsequently left Jurgen Klopp’s team at the end of the previous campaign.

Michael Edwards to revolutionise Manchester United?

During his time in Liverpool, Edwards oversaw the arrival of several quality signings at relatively inexpensive fees. The likes of Virgil van Dijk, Alisson, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Andy Robertson and Fabinho, amongst others, formed a part of his legacy in Merseyside.

On the other hand, United have evidently not had proper management for several years now. Ed Woodward seemingly oversaw every incoming at Old Trafford during his tenure as CEO.

The investment banker’s reign saw the Red Devils splash the cash on a number of signings that ended up being disastrous. Angel Di Maria, Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez are just some of the names in a long list of apparent failures.

With John Murtough and Richard Arnold now handling things in the recent transfer window, it still was not as efficient as fans would have liked.

Initially, United signed Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez. However, we did not get another player in before the 4-0 disaster at the Gtech Community Stadium. The loss to Brentford seemingly compelled the hierarchy to buy Antony and Casemiro.

While most of our signings from the summer of 2022 have made an immediate impact, supporters feel we overpaid for some of the deals. Hopefully, with the possible arrival of an astute operator like Edwards, the Red Devils will be better in the transfer market.
