Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United interested in January move for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong
Manchester United, alongside Chelsea and Liverpool, are interested in signing Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong in January, according to ESPN (h/t Metro).
The Blues and the Merseysiders have made contact with the 25-year-old representatives. And the two clubs have received ‘encouragement’ about a possible deal in the winter transfer window.
De Jong was pursued by United in the summer of 2022. The Red Devils had agreed terms with the Blaugrana. However, the Holland international was not keen on moving to Old Trafford.
Erik ten Hag was eyeing a reunion with his former Ajax midfielder. However, the 25-year-old did not fancy leaving Catalunya for Manchester.
However, De Jong is reconsidering his stance, with game time hard to come by at Barcelona. The Holland international is frustrated with a lack of opportunities under Xavi Hernandez this season.
The 25-year-old moved to Spain from Amsterdam in the summer of 2019. And the midfielder has been an important member of Barcelona’s starting lineup since then.
However, in the current campaign, De Jong has started six games, having featured a total of 12 times in all competitions. The likes of Sergio Busquets, Pedri and Gavi have been preferred ahead of him by Xavi.
United did add to their midfield ranks in the recent transfer window. The club signed Christian Eriksen and Casemiro. However, fans still feel we lack quality in the middle of the park. The Red Devils have lacked control in certain games this season.

De Jong is one of the best when it comes to keeping hold of the ball. And with Ten Hag seemingly wanting to implement a possession-based style at the Old Trafford side, it remains to be seen whether the 25-year-old is the gaffer’s chosen one.
