Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag feels Bruno Fernandes can contribute more in terms of goals and assists. Nonetheless, the former Ajax head coach is delighted with the Portugal international’s overall performances.

Fernandes has struggled to emulate the form he showed with the Red Devils when he initially arrived in January 2020. However, the 28-year-old has not put up similar numbers in recent months.

Speaking to the media via Manchester Evening News, Ten Hag expressed delight over Fernandes’ displays this season. And the Dutch manager backs the Portugal international to help the team find the back of the net more often.

“Bruno is playing really well this season.

In that fact, he can produce more goals and assists but I think he is often in the line of the goal and he is playing I think a massive role in a lot of moments of football for us, in build-up and in creativity and attacking, movement but also transition, both sides.”

When Fernandes first arrived at United from Sporting CP, the midfielder made an immediate impact with his goals and assists. In the 2020/21 season, the 28-year-old featured in 58 games and found the back of the net 28 times in all competitions.

However, his numbers have dried up a bit since. In the previous campaign, the Portugal international scored 10 goals and gave 14 assists in 46 appearances in all competitions.

Fernandes has been a critical member of Ten Hag’s team this season. The attacking midfielder has played in every fixture. However, he only has one goal and two assists to his name, having featured 13 times.

The 28-year-old has made the number 10 position his own in Manchester. The Portuguese has also been handed the captain’s armband in the absence of Harry Maguire. The English defender has fallen out of favour under the Dutch manager.

Fernandes may not be scoring or assisting a lot, but he is still one of the best players in the United squad. Hopefully, the Portuguese is able to find his best form once again and help the Red Devils compete against the top sides.
