FC Porto set to offer Diogo Costa new contract to fend off interest from Manchester United
Manchester United target Diogo Costa is set to be offered a new contract by FC Porto amidst interest from a number of top clubs, according to O Jogo via CaughtOffside (h/t Manchester Evening News).
Erik ten Hag is an admirer of the 23-year-old goalkeeper for his impressive ball-playing abilities. However, the Portuguese is valued at around £51 million by the Primeira Liga outfit.
Costa’s existing deal with Porto runs until 2026. However, to fend off interest from the likes of the Red Devils, the Dragoes are willing to secure the shot-stopper’s services with a new contract.
The 23-year-old has come up through the ranks at Porto. But it was only last season that the Portugal international got an opportunity to fight for his place in the team. And the goalkeeper has managed to cement his place as the number one at the Primeira Liga outfit.
Costa has started every game for Porto in the 2022/23 campaign. The Portuguese shot-stopper has featured 13 times for the Dragoes in all competitions and has kept seven clean sheets so far.
United currently have David de Gea in the team as the first choice. The Spaniard has been a constant in between the posts for the Red Devils for several years now.
Alongside the 31-year-old, Erik ten Hag has Martin Dubravka and Tom Heaton at his disposal. However, none of them have featured for the Old Trafford side yet this season.
While De Gea is seemingly an undisputed starter, fans do have doubts about him. The Spaniard is one of the best shot-stoppers in the game. However, his distribution leaves a lot to be desired.
