AC Milan “confident” of tying Rafael Leao to new contract with the likes of Manchester United interested
Manchester United have been dealt a blow with AC Milan “confident” of tying down Rafael Leao to a new contract. The Rossoneri’s director Frederic Massara is looking to come to an agreement with the Portuguese.
Leao joined Milan in the summer of 2019 from Sporting CP. However, the 23-year-old needed time to settle in. It was only last season that his performances turned many heads.
Speaking about Leao’s situation via The Sun, Massara revealed the Serie A outfit’s plans to keep the Portugal international at the club for the long term.
“We’re confident to reach an agreement with Leao and extend his contract. We’ll try to find a solution to proceed with Rafa for long time.”
Chelsea were amongst the Premier League clubs pursuing Leao in the recent transfer window. However, the Rossoneri were asking for the 23-year-old’s £130 million release clause.
Leao has also attracted the eyes of United. The Red Devils had sent scouts to monitor the forward in Milan’s recent Champions League fixture against the Blues at the San Siro Stadium.
Manchester City could also lure Leao to the Etihad Stadium. Thus, the Serie A outfit are looking to secure their asset by rewarding him with a new deal.
In the previous campaign, the 23-year-old made 42 appearances for Milan in all competitions, scoring 14 goals and providing 12 assists. And this season, the Portuguese has been in fine form as well, finding the back of the net four times and assisting eight in 13 appearances in all competitions.
United have a 37-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo. And the Red Devils will evidently need to soon look for a replacement for the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.

Leao is an exciting prospect with a bright future ahead of him. Hopefully, United will be able to convince the 23-year-old to make a switch to the red of Manchester in the coming future.
