Noel Whelan urges Newcastle United to sign Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw
Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has urged Newcastle United to sign Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw. The former player turned BBC pundit feels a move for the England international would make sense for the Magpies.
Shaw has been in and out of the starting lineup under Erik ten Hag. Summer 2022 signing Tyrell Malacia has given the 27-year-old a run for his money. The Holland international had started in several back-to-back fixtures before the England international got back in the team.
Speaking to Football Insider (h/t Manchester Evening News), Whelan suggested that Newcastle should go after Shaw’s signature. He wants the Magpies to emulate what they did with Kieran Trippier.
“I think with the way they did it with Trippier, bringing in that experience and quality – they’ll be happy to repeat that success. It’s down to the manager as well.
“I think if you get him playing under Eddie Howe, he’d become a better player. It’d be exciting, it makes sense – and having that kind of experience is invaluable for a club like Newcastle.”
Newcastle signed 32-year-old Trippier from Atletico Madrid in January this year. The England international came into the side and immediately made a difference in Eddie Howe’s team.
Tripper has brought quality and experience to Newcastle. The Magpies were fighting relegation. However, the change in ownership has turned things around for them.
Newcastle now seem to have the finances to compete with the top sides. They currently sit sixth in the Premier League, a point behind Man United.
The Red Devils faced the Toons at Old Trafford on 16 October. Unfortunately, we were unable to take three points off Howe’s team.

Shaw signed for Man United in the summer of 2014 from Southampton. However, the verdict is still out on him. Fans feel the 27-year-old is a bit inconsistent. The former Saints star has started just four games for the Old Trafford side this season.
But Shaw is a decent player. The left-back showcases his qualities on a regular basis for the England national team. The 27-year-old needs to do the same for Man United week in, week out.
