Erik ten Hag reveals that Anthony Martial is not in training thanks to an injury

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has given an update on the injury of Anthony Martial after the forward had to be taken off against Everton. The French forward is not training with the Red Devils today.

Martial started for United at Goodison Park against Frank Lampard’s team. The 26-year-old provided the assist for the equaliser that Antony scored in the 15th minute of the fixture.

Unfortunately, Martial came off just before the half-hour mark and was replaced by Cristiano Ronaldo. Speaking to the media via Samuel Luckhurst on Twitter, this is what the gaffer had to say about the attacker’s fitness situation:

“Not [training] today. We will see how he develops to Sunday.”

With the former AS Monaco star off, it was the five-time Ballon d’Or winner who was deployed in the centre-forward role. And Ronaldo did not disappoint as he gave the Red Devils the lead in the 44th minute. The game ended 2-1.

The Portugal international has struggled for form and, in turn, has found it hard to get into the starting lineup. However, against Everton, the 37-year-old finally opened his account for the 2022/23 Premier League campaign. It was also Ronaldo’s 700th club career goal.

Martial has been troubled by injuries

Martial signed for United in the summer of 2015. The French national was considered a great prospect, with fans thinking he would be the next big star to don the red shirt.

However, Martial has failed to live up to the expectations. In the previous campaign, the 26-year-old was out of favour at United. And subsequently, the forward moved to Sevilla on loan in January.

Thankfully, Martial seems to have found his feet under Ten Hag. The Dutch manager has managed to rejuvenate the French national. But unfortunately, the 26-year-old has had issues staying fit this season.

Martial has been pivotal for the Red Devils under the Dutch manager. The forward has contributed with a goal or assist every time he has featured in the current campaign. So hopefully, the knock he picked at Goodison is nothing serious.
