Cristiano Ronaldo expected to stay at Manchester United in January due to a lack of interest from other clubs

Manchester United expect Cristiano Ronaldo to stay at the club beyond the upcoming January transfer window due to a lack of interest in the Portuguese, according to ESPN (h/t Express).

Ronaldo has expressed his desire to leave the Old Trafford side in search of Champions League football. However, a dearth of options could see the 37-year-old remain at the club.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s current contract with United ends next summer. And the Red Devils are hopeful of the Portugal international being a part of the team for the rest of the season.

Ronaldo wanted a move away in the recent transfer window. The likes of Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Napoli were the clubs being associated with the 37-year-old. However, he ended up staying put at Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag is sympathetic towards Ronaldo’s desires. However, the Dutch manager is reluctant to let go of the Portuguese star in the winter transfer window.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner ended the previous campaign as our leading goalscorer. Ronaldo featured 38 times for the Red Devils in all competitions. The Portuguese scored 24 goals and provided three assists.

However, Ronaldo has not had a significant role in Ten Hag’s team as of yet. The 37-year-old has mostly come on as a substitute for the Red Devils in the 2022/23 campaign. Marcus Rashford has been preferred by the gaffer in the number nine position.

Ronaldo has started just one game in the Premier League this season. The Portuguese was also left on the bench as Manchester City beat us 6-3.

The 37-year-old has one goal and one assist in nine appearances in all competitions in the current campaign. Ronaldo has cut a mostly frustrated figure, as was apparent in the 3-2 win over Omonia Nicosia. It remains to be seen whether he remains a United player beyond January.
