Erik ten Hag reveals plan to ease Anthony Martial back to action after injury

Speaking in an interview with United’s in-house media as quoted by Manchester Evening News, Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag have revealed plans to ease French star Anthony Martial back to action after an injury layoff.

Martial has had a torrid time with injuries since the start of the season. He had an excellent pre-season with the Red Devils where he scored goals for fun and it looked like the Frenchman was turning over a new leaf in a Man United shirt.

As fate may have it, Martial got injured right at the end of the pre-season and this meant that the talented striker could not get into the team and nail down his spot, despite ten Hag’s reluctance to play Cristiano Ronaldo.

The striker did return briefly for Man United’s clash against Liverpool and even managed to provide an assist but he got injured yet again and missed action until the last game. Martial returned to competitive action against Manchester City when he came on in the second half for Marcus Rashford.

The former Monaco wonderkid wasted absolutely no time showing Erik ten Hag how much he wanted to succeed this season. The striker was the lone saving grace on an awful night scoring a brace against Ederson and Man City.

Whilst Martial might not be back to full fitness yet which is understandable considering the long lay-off, there is no doubt that he will want to stay fit and get back to speed for the Red Devils and prove a point this season.

Speaking about the Frenchman, ten Hag admitted that the club will ease Martial back into action with gradual minutes given to him ever passing game

“After a good pre-season, he fell out and only played a half game against Liverpool and we are happy he’s back. But we will take it careful, step by step in a process to bring him back, but he played now almost a half, so 35 minutes, which is good and now we have to extend that. But from game to game, and we have a lot of games to cover.”

United have a hectic October ahead of them. There is no doubt that Martial will be a key player for Ten Hag and will get a lot of minutes. If he can continue his good form, there is an outside chance that the Red Devils striker makes it to the World Cup.

Martial is a player with a lot of potential who never really realised it on a football pitch. It is never too late though, and the Frenchman could still end up having a solid career if he manages to continue the good form this season.
