Jamie Carragher slams ‘bullying’ of Manchester United defender Harry Maguire

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher is of the opinion that Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire is being bullied for his poor form. The former England defender feels people have been harsh towards the 29-year-old.

Maguire has come in for a lot of flak since last year for his performances for the Red Devils. The centre-back has been on the receiving end of a lot of abuse on social media.

The United captain seems to have lost his confidence since the Euro 2020 final. Maguire was one of the Three Lions’ best players at the tournament. However, the 29-year-old has been a shadow of his former self since the loss to Italy in the final.

In the previous campaign, Maguire made a lot of errors at the Old Trafford side. And there were calls from United fans to drop the defender from the starting lineup. And this season, Erik ten Hag has decided to drop our captain to the bench following defeats in the first two games.

Against Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford, where Maguire started, the Red Devils were shocking defensively. However, the England international was not on the pitch as Manchester City beat us 6-3.

Speaking on Monday Night Football for Sky Sports (h/t Manchester Evening News), Carragher has slammed the treatment Maguire is receiving.

“It’s about where he is confidence wise. The criticism he is getting, I think is over the top and it’s bullying, it has got to that stage, certainly on social media.”

Maguire has spent most of his time on the bench at United this season. But Gareth Southgate decided to call the 29-year-old to the national team squad during the recent international break.

The centre-back started against Italy and Germany in the UEFA Nations League. However, he was poor for the Three Lions against Hansi Flick’s team.

Maguire has cut a dejected figure on the United bench. And the spotlight seems to be on him whenever he steps on the pitch in a red shirt. Maybe some time on the sidelines could be wise for the player.
