Raphael Varane did not sustain a serious injury during Manchester United vs Manchester City
Manchester United have been provided with an injury boost as Raphael Varane will not be sidelined for long after limping off before half-time against Manchester City, according to L’Equipe (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The French centre-back went down on the edge of the box after blocking a shot from Phil Foden. In the process, the 29-year-old seemed to have hurt his ankle as the defender stayed down.
In the 40th minute of the game, Varane was taken off. It was a bad day at the office for the Frenchman as the Red Devils were already down by three goals by the time he left the pitch. The Manchester-based club eventually lost 6-3.
Varane has undergone scans and, fortunately, there is no ligament or bone damage. The 29-year-old has sustained a “sprained” ankle.
Varane has found his feet at United
Signing from Real Madrid in the summer of 2021, Varane did not have the best of debut seasons. The defender missed a lot of games due to fitness issues and was unable to get consistent minutes. In the previous campaign, the 29-year-old played 29 times for the Old Trafford side in all competitions.
United were disappointing in the backline last season, with Harry Maguire, Lindelof and Varane sharing minutes. However, Erik ten Hag seems to have brought a few changes.
The Dutch manager reunited with Lisandro Martinez in the recent transfer window. The Argentine defender arrived from Ajax and has slotted straight in the starting lineup.
Alongside the 2018 World Cup winner, Martinez has formed a decent partnership. With the two in the starting lineup, the Red Devils had gone on a four-game winning run in the Premier League before falling to City.
