Manchester United remain desperate to secure a deal for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong
Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong is still a target for Manchester United as the Red Devils are ‘still desperate’ to secure a deal next summer, according to Fichajes (h/t Manchester Evening News).
United missed out on the 25-year-old in the recent transfer window. The Old Trafford side will once again try to pursue a deal for the Holland international in the upcoming year.
De Jong was a target for United throughout the summer of 2022. However, a deal for the Holland international failed to materialise. And the Red Devils subsequently bought Casemiro from Real Madrid.
However, the Brazilian has not been able to stamp his authority in Erik ten Hag’s plans yet. The 30-year-old had built the reputation of being one of the best defensive midfielders in world football in his time in Spain.
But Casemiro has not started any Premier League game for United in the 2022/23 season. The Brazilian’s starts have come in the Europa League only.
United made several other signings in the recent transfer window. And most of them have slotted straight into the starting XI. The likes of Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen, Lisandro Martinez and Antony have become vital members in the side.
Thus, it seems Ten Hag does not seem to fancy Casemiro as of now. Scott McTominay has started ahead of the former Madrid star. While the Scotland international did have a good run in the team, fans will concede he is nowhere near the quality of the Brazilian.

The 6-3 loss to Manchester City once again exposed the frailties the Red Devils have in the middle of the park. And Casemiro is known for his nous to disrupt opposition attacks in the middle of the park.
However, United evidently need someone able to keep a hold of the ball in tight spaces. And fans who have seen De Jong play regularly know that he can keep possession even in high-pressure situations. But will the 25-year-old want a reunion with Ten Hag in Manchester? It remains to be seen.
