Gary Neville feels David de Gea will soon find himself out of favour at Manchester United

Manchester United legend Gary Neville feels David de Gea will soon find himself out of favour at the club. The former captain of the Red Devils does not think Erik ten Hag fancies the Spanish shot-stopper.

De Gea has been the first choice at United this season. However, the 31-year-old struggled at the start of the 2022/23 campaign as the Dutch manager wanted to play from out the back. However, while the Spaniard has kept his place, the former Ajax boss has evidently tweaked his system.

The Red Devils have seemingly shifted to a more counter-attacking setup. And the possession-based style that the Red Devils used at the start of the season looks to have been abandoned.

Speaking on his Sky Sports Podcast via Manchester Evening News, Neville is of the opinion that Ten Hag has had to alter his style of play. However, the defender, who spent his entire career with the Red Devils, thinks the Dutch manager will soon want to impose his ideas.

“I think he’s had to step back to go forward, but we all know where Ten Hag wants to get this United team, he wants 75% possession, players that can handle the ball, defenders can handle the ball and the goalkeeper needs to be brilliant on the ball.

“I suspect with David de Gea, his United career is going to be shortlived under Ten Hag because he’s going to be adamant that his philosophy of playing out from the back.”

United lost to Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford at the start of the 2022/23 campaign. Subsequently, Ten Hag made some significant changes to his starting lineup, dropping the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Maguire to the bench.

Against Liverpool, United played on the break. Marcus Rashford’s pace posed a problem for the Merseyside club’s backline. And the Red Devils eventually got the better of Jurgen Klopp in the North West derby.

United have continued in a similar fashion since then in the Premier League. And the Old Trafford side found success, up until the Manchester derby.

De Gea’s role has seemingly changed a bit. The Spaniard apparently has more freedom in launching the ball long rather than playing it short. And the 31-year-old has also made some clutch saves in recent weeks to save us on many occasions – just like he did last season.

But for how long will Ten Hag compromise on his ideas to accommodate certain players? Only time will tell. Fans feel the Dutch manager needs to be given the players to stamp his authority on the side if we want to compete against the likes of Manchester City.
