Erik ten Hag explains the form of Scott McTominay has prevented Casemiro from starting at Manchester United
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has clarified that the form of Scott McTominay has prevented Casemiro from getting more starts. The 30-year-old started once again on the bench against Manchester City.
Casemiro signed for the Red Devils in the recent transfer window from Real Madrid. The 30-year-old had established himself as one of the best players in the world in Spain.
However, Casemiro has not been in the starting XI often this season. And speaking to the media via Manchester Evening News, Ten Hag has seemingly asked fans to be patient. The Dutch manager wants to integrate the Brazilian into the team in a gradual manner.
“The team is doing really well, it’s not against Casemiro, it’s for, in this case, Scott McTominay, he performed great in the team and then we get into a run.
“But I’m sure it will be important for us in the long and short-term, he will find himself in the team but it has to come in a natural way.”
Casemiro was unveiled to the Old Trafford crowd just before United took on Liverpool in the North West Derby. And the Red Devils ended up winning the game 2-1, registering their first points on the board.
McTominay started against the Merseysiders and put in an impressive performance. Since then, the Scotland international has been in the XI in every game for Ten Hag in the Premier League.
And McTominay did not put a wrong foot until the Manchester derby. At the Etihad Stadium, the 25-year-old was overwhelmed in the middle of the park. Pep Guardiola’s team dominated the engine room.
Casemiro has started just once under the Dutch manager. The Brazilian played 90 minutes in the Europa League against Real Sociedad.
However, Casemiro has mainly been a substitute and he came on in the 59th minute against City, replacing McTominay. In the end, the Red Devils lost 6-3 against the Sky Blues.
