Erik ten Hag deems former Ajax star Donny van de Beek ‘surplus to requirements’ at Manchester United
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has deemed Donny van de Beek ‘surplus to requirements’, according to The Daily Express via Sky Sports Premier League on Twitter. The Holland international has not had the best of times with the Red Devils.
Van de Beek joined the Old Trafford side in the summer of 2020 following a successful spell at Ajax. The Holland international used to play under the current United boss in Amsterdam.
The 25-year-old has not played much for the Red Devils since his move. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gave Van de Beek opportunities in his debut season. However, the Holland international mostly came off the bench.
In the 2021/22 campaign, Van de Beek found himself out of favour. The 25-year-old did not start a Premier League game under the Norwegian manager or interim boss Ralf Rangnick. Subsequently, the Holland international joined Everton on loan in January.
While Van de Beek did play more often under Frank Lampard, an injury hampered his game time. Eventually, the Holland international spent most of the second half of last season on the sidelines.
Van de Beek returned to United in the summer of 2022. And fans thought that with the arrival of Ten Hag, the 25-year-old would be able to rejuvenate his career in Manchester. However, that has not been the case.
The Holland international has not played much under the former Ajax head coach either. In the 2022/23 campaign, Van de Beek has made appearances as a substitute three times, and that too in the final minutes of games.

United signed Christian Eriksen and Casemiro in the recent transfer window. The addition of the two has seemingly sent the 25-year-old further down the pecking order. Will Van de Beek finally leave the Red Devils on a permanent transfer in January? It remains to be seen.
