Paul Ince believes Manchester United ace Harry Maguire is being made a scapegoat for club and country
Former Manchester United attacker Paul Ince believes that centre-back Harry Maguire is being made a ‘scapegoat’ for both club and country.
The 29-year-old has very often come under scrutiny for his performance ever since moving to Old Trafford in 2019. United payed £80 million for him, but he has not lived up to that value.
And now, former Reds attacker believes that the defender is being made a scapegoat. Speaking to Fair Betting Sites (h/t Manchester Evening News), the former player his opinion.
“I think Harry Maguire has been very good for England in the past. It’s difficult because the situation at the moment is he’s not playing for Manchester United, so he lacks that match-fit sharpness. I think it’s tough because people are making him a scapegoat at the moment. We had the same situation with Raheem Sterling In the Euros.”
Maguire has found game time to come by very less at United this season. Despite being the captain of the team, the centre-back has only played started in three of the eight games the club has played so far in all competitions.
Gareth Southgate still called him up for international duty last month. The defender started in both the games against Italy and Germany but came under huge scrutiny for the latter. He gave away a penalty and then was also at fault for the second goal.
The game ended 3-3, but the United centre-back was again slaughtered for his performance. Erik ten Hag has preferred to start Raphael Varane at the back along with new summer signing Lisandro Martinez.
Both the centre-backs have been phenomenal and the fans are loving the partnership the duo have built at the back. No manager would like to break such an established partnership at the back to start someone else.

United will travel to face Manchester City this Sunday. Maguire had picked up a knock in the game against Germany. He is likely to be fit enough for the game, but there is very less chance of him starting one.
