Stan Collymore tips Manchester United defender Harry Maguire to leave if he continues to remain on the bench

Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire has been tipped to leave the club by former Premier League ace Stan Collymore. The former Nottingham Forest and Liverpool forward feels the 29-year-old’s time with the Red Devils is “coming to an end”.

Maguire signed for United from Leicester City in a deal worth £80 million in the summer of 2019. The defender had a couple of good seasons with the Red Devils. However, the 29-year-old has been underwhelming since the 2021/22 campaign.

The England international has lost his place in the side under Erik ten Hag. And speaking exclusively to CaughtOffside (h/t Express), Collymore, who ended his playing career in 2001, is of the opinion that Maguire’s spell with United is reaching its conclusion.

“And although I expect Maguire to be a good enough professional to get his head down and do whatever is asked of him, I think his time at Old Trafford is ultimately coming to an end.”

Last season, the Red Devils had the eighth worst defence in the English top flight. United conceded 57 goals and ended with a goal difference of zero. Our captain was a key member of the Old Trafford side’s backline.

Maguire did not have a great start under Ten Hag, either. United lost against Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford in the opening two games. Since then, the 29-year-old has not started for the Red Devils in the PL.

Collymore had the same agent during his playing career, Paul Stretford, who works for Maguire now. And the former striker believes the 29-year-old’s representative will be looking to move his client if the defender remains out of favour.

“Maguire’s agent is Paul Stretford, who was also my agent when I was a professional player, so I know Stretford will not want his star client sitting there not doing much.

“He will know that he has a real big asset on his hands, so he will want him to be playing.”

Although Maguire has not been the first choice at United in recent weeks, Gareth Southgate picked him to represent England recently. The centre-back started for the Three Lions against Italy and Germany. However, he did not perform well.

Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez have formed a formidable partnership for the Red Devils. Ten Hag stuck with the French and Argentine duo since the Liverpool game. And when the two have started together for the Old Trafford side, we have won every time.

Considering the form Varane and Martinez are in, it will evidently be difficult for Maguire to get regular minutes. Will the 29-year-old opt to cut his losses and leave the Red Devils in the coming future? Fans will have to wait and see.
