David de Gea set to hold crunch contract talks with Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag
Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is set to hold crunch talks with Erik ten Hag over his contract, according to The Daily Star (h/t Express). The Spaniard’s existing deal concludes at the end of the season.
De Gea arrived at the Old Trafford side in the summer of 2011 from Atletico Madrid. And United are eyeing the La Liga outfit’s current shot-stopper Jan Oblak. This has made the Spaniard wary of his position at the club.
De Gea wants clarity around his future with the Red Devils. While the 31-year-old is the number one under the Dutch manager currently, the Old Trafford side are yet to trigger the option to extend his stay by another year.
The Spaniard is currently on £300,000 a week. De Gea will be able to negotiate with clubs outside of England in January and leave as a free agent next summer. But the 31-year-old wants to understand what the Dutch manager thinks about his future at United.
Ten Hag has trusted De Gea in the 2022/23 campaign. The Spaniard has started every game for the Red Devils this season. And the 31-year-old initially struggled.
Against Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford, De Gea looked uncomfortable playing out from the back. The Dutch manager has seemingly emphasised that the goalkeeper play short. However, it backfired in the first two fixtures as we lost.

Since then, De Gea has evidently been allowed more freedom in goal. The Spaniard has often played the ball out long instead of rigidly passing it to his defenders.

However, will Ten Hag continue to compromise on his style of play to accommodate De Gea? Only time will tell. For now, the 31-year-old is performing well in between the sticks, making critical saves. But it remains to be seen what the future holds for the Spaniard.
