Paul Robinson believes Newcastle United will have to ‘overpay’ for Manchester United summer 2022 target Youri Tielemans
Newcastle United have been told by Paul Robinson that they will have to “overpay” for Youri Tielemans, who Manchester United were linked with in the summer of 2022.
The former Tottenham Hotspur and Blackburn Rovers shot-stopper feels a lot of sides will be keeping an eye on the Belgian. The Leicester City midfielder has less than a year left on his current deal.
Speaking to Football Insider (h/t Express), Robinson feels Newcastle would have to pay over the top for Tielemans in January. However, the former England goalkeeper feels it is worth it for a player of the Belgian’s quality.
“You would have to overpay for a player who has six months left on his contract but it would still be cheap. I imagine there will be a lot of teams in the race to sign him in January. He is a top player and that is why Arsenal and Man United have looked at him.”
He did go on to add that the Magpies have the financial power to get a deal across the line for the 25-year-old midfielder.
United and Arsenal were interested in Tielemans in the recent transfer window. And the Belgian was linked with a £25 million move to either side in the summer of 2022. However, a move never materialised.
The Red Devils bolstered their ranks by bringing six new faces to the Manchester-based club. Among them, the club brought two midfielders to reinforce the middle of the park.
United signed Christian Eriksen as a free agent. The Denmark international arrived at Old Trafford after enjoying a short spell with Brentford. And the 30-year-old has been one of the Red Devils’ best players this season.
Casemiro also made a switch to the red of Manchester from Real Madrid. The Brazilian has placed himself amongst the elites, having won multiple Champions League trophies with Los Blancos.
United also have Scott McTominay, Fred and Donny van de Beek in their ranks to be deployed in the number six and number eight positions. However, only the Scotland international has evidently stepped up his game for the Red Devils in the current campaign.

Erik ten Hag has found balance in the side in recent weeks. However, Tielemans is a quality player who could arrive on the cheap if we pursue him. It remains to be seen where the Belgian’s future lies.
