Jamie Carragher feels Harry Maguire should leave Manchester United at the end of the 2022/23 season
Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has been told by Jamie Carragher to leave the club at the end of the 2022/23 season. The Liverpool icon believes the 29-year-old needs a fresh challenge.
Maguire has lost his place in the recent weeks in the Red Devils’ starting XI. Erik ten Hag has kept the England international on the bench in the Premier League since the loss to Brentford.
Writing in his Daily Telegraph column (Subscription Required) [h/t Manchester Evening News], Carragher, who spent 17 years with the Merseysiders, argues that Maguire’s time at United is over. He wants the 29-year-old to leave the Red Devils.
“I think it is too late at club level. I wrote last year he was fighting for his Manchester United career. He needs this to be his final season at Old Trafford and start afresh.”
Maguire has been at the receiving end of a lot of criticism lately for his performances. The England international did not have the best of times in the previous campaigns. The 29-year-old made a lot of errors.
The centre-back was a regular fixture in the Red Devils’ backline last season. And United had the eighth worst defensive record in the PL. The old Trafford side conceded 57 goals and ended with a goal difference of zero.
Ten Hag trusted Maguire at the start of the current campaign. However, after losing his first two competitive games in the Old Trafford dugout, the Dutch manager opted to replace the 29-year-old with Raphael Varane in the defence.
Since then, the partnership of the 2018 World Cup winner and Lisandro Martinez has seen United go on a four-game winning run in the league.
Maguire was part of Gareth Southgate’s starting lineups that recently played Italy and Germany in the UEFA Nations League. Against Die Mannschaft, the centre-back made a few errors that led to goals.

The England international’s place in the Three Lions’ setup is being questioned at the moment. And Maguire’s situation at United is not helping his cause. Will Maguire opt to leave the Red Devils if he cannot get back in Ten Hag’s plans? Only time will tell.
