Frenkie de Jong opens up on failed Manchester United summer move

Speaking in an interview with @NOS as quoted by popular Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong reveals that he was never close to completing the move to Manchester United in the recently concluded transfer window.

In what was a saga that dragged on for so long this summer, it was not clear until the very last day whether the Dutch superstar will complete the move to Man United or Chelsea, two clubs that he was linked with.

When Erik ten Hag took over at Man United, he was very keen on bringing the talented midfielder to Old Trafford and the Red Devils went all out to try and convince the Barcelona man to jump ship and come to England.

Chelsea were also actively pursuing the 25-year-old midfielder, who at his best, can be absolutely devastating on a football pitch. However, the Blues were not able to tempt the Dutchman even with Champions League football.

Speaking about the moves, Frenkie has claimed that there wasn’t any doubt in his mind that he was going to stay in Barcelona.

“Chelsea and Man United interest? I already decided in May that I wanted to stay at Barcelona. I never changed this decision during the summer”

Wage demands of Manchester United target Adrien Rabiot 'weren't crazy' as deal with Juventus collapsed.
Frenkie De Jong was Man United’s priority target this summer.

From what the player himself claims, it seems like Frenkie’s rumoured move to Manchester United was not close to happening at any point and it seems like it was the media speculation that made us believe that it might.

Frenkie has started off this season exceptionally well for Barcelona. He has been consistent with his performances, something that was lacking from his game for a very long time and has looked really solid whenever he has played.

Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez has tried to use Frenkie in different positions throughout this season. He deployed him as a centre-back for much of pre-season but we have not seen that happen in the campaign yet.

A player of Frenkie’s quality and ability is never going to go out of relevance. It remains to be seen if Manchester United return for the Dutch superstar in the future but right now, he seems to want to stay put in Spain.
