Manchester United left-back Tyrell Malacia believes the game against Liverpool was the turning point for the Red Devils’ season. It also signified a change in the Holland international’s role in the squad, with him starting every match since then.

United were coming off losses in Erik ten Hag’s first two competitive games in the Old Trafford side’s dugout. And the Merseysiders were set to visit Manchester next in the Premier League. However, we were able to get over the line in the North West derby.

Speaking to ESPN (h/t Manchester Evening News), Malacia stated that after the negative results in the opening fixtures, there was a shift in how United played. The Liverpool game also gave the Holland international his first start for the Red Devils.

“I think so [Liverpool turning point]. Of course, we didn’t start the first two games well. The training week after that you see that you get to start in the starting eleven and you get to start against Liverpool. What more do you want?

“The intensity is a bit higher. Every week is a final. That is a big difference, but I focus on my own game.”

United won 2-1 on the day as the Merseysiders were not allowed to play by our players. Malacia brilliantly marshalled Mohamed Salah out of the game as well.

Jadon Sancho scored the first goal in the 16th minute. The 22-year-old was the first player for the Manchester-based club to score under the new gaffer.

Marcus Rashford doubled the lead in the 53rd minute. For the 24-year-old and Sancho, the goals seemed to have given them confidence. The English duo had in the previous season failed to live up to expectations.

Mohamed Salah managed to get one back for Liverpool. However, we were resolute at the back. Ten Hag made some big changes after the 4-0 loss to Brentford. And benching Harry Maguire was one of them.

The centre-back pairing of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez has been exceptional. The Red Devils have not lost a single game when the two have started together this season.
