Manchester United are reluctant to spend money on new players in the January transfer window
Erik ten Hag realises Manchester United need more signings to compete against the best. However, the Red Devils are reluctant to spend any more in the January transfer window after the recent summer spending spree, according to The Athletic (Subscription Required) [h/t Mirror].
United saw a total of six arrivals in the recent transfer window. The club spent big money on the likes of Lisandro Martinez, Casemiro and Antony. The summer also saw the addition of Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen and Martin Dubravka.
However, the number of departures was in the double figures. Andreas Pereira, Eric Bailly and Tahith Chong are the ones the Red Devils got a fee for. Other than that, Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Nemanja Matic and Edinson Cavani, amongst others, left for free.
While the club has evidently made efforts to strengthen Ten Hag’s squad, the outgoings have depleted the depth in the team. And there could be more players set to leave in January.
Cristiano Ronaldo was angling for a move away from Manchester in the summer. But he ended up staying at the club. However, the 37-year-old is still keen on leaving. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has not had the best of starts to the new campaign.
Ronaldo ended the previous season as our top goalscorer. However, the Portuguese missed most of the pre-season under the new manager. And he has started on the bench in most of the Red Devils’ fixtures so far.
There are other players in the squad who have not been played a lot by Ten Hag. Wan-Bissaka is seemingly out of favour at the moment. The 24-year-old has played just four minutes in the 2022/23 campaign.

Most of the gaffer’s new signings have made an immediate impact in the team. Eriksen has started every game. Antony scored on his debut. Martinez has shined in recent weeks. Hopefully, United officials will see the progress being made and back Ten Hag in January.
