Glen Johnson: Manchester United would pounce at the chance to sign Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante
Former Chelsea defender Glen Johnson has suggested that Manchester United would “bite your arm off” to sign N’Golo Kante. The Blues midfielder is out of contract at the Stamford Bridge side next year.
Chelsea have been unable to agree to terms with the France international. The 31-year-old is unhappy with the length of the deal the Stanford Bridge side have tabled.
Speaking to bettingodds (h/t Metro), Johnson, who spent four seasons at the London-based club, brought United into the picture if Kante were to leave. He feels the Red Devils will pounce at the opportunity to get the 31-year-old.
“Manchester United were linked with him in the summer and I’m sure they’d bite your arm off for a player like N’Golo Kante.”
Kante wants a three-year deal at Chelsea. However, the Blues are offering the France international a two-year contract with the option for another season.
United should pass on the opportunity to get Kante
Considering the 31-year-old’s injury record, the Stamford Bridge side seem to be wary of tying Kante down long-term. This could open up the avenue for other clubs around Europe to begin talks in January on a free transfer.
United have signed Casemiro this summer. The defensive midfielder comes with a vast pedigree from Real Madrid. The Brazilian has been one of the best in his position in recent times.
While Kante is a quality player, over the last couple of years, fans have felt his powers wane a bit. The Frenchman has had a hard time staying fit. And the injuries look to have taken a toll on his body.
Kante is the highest-paid player at Chelsea. While United could do with more talent in the middle of the park, it does not seem wise to spend big money on a player seemingly in decline.

The Red Devils already have an ageing midfield. Casemiro and Christian Eriksen are both 30 years old. Supporters would want the club to go after exciting young talent capable of securing the engine room for years to come.
